Student Documentary Awards Overview

Guidelines

Guidelines

Applicants should write a two-page proposal describing the focus of their documentary project, and whether they will work with photography, writing, video, or audio. The Center for Documentary Studies sets no restrictions on the subject of the project, but does want to see work that explores some aspect of the human condition and that expands understanding of people's lives. Prizewinners will have the opportunity to consult with CDS staff and associates and use CDS facilities while working on their projects.

Submit the following typed information:

• Two- to three-page letter of application describing the project, including a statement about the importance of the project, the methods you will use, and what you hope to accomplish over the summer

• Short budget covering supplies, travel costs, accommodations, and other expenses related to fieldwork

• Self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) for the return of all samples and supporting materials

• One-page autobiography and résumé including name, university, and year

• Sample of work in the format the student intends to use (for example, five-minute video, ten to twenty photos on disc or as prints, five-page writing sample)

• Two letters of recommendation, one from a professor and another from someone outside academia, mailed to CDS or emailed to cdthomps@duke.edu

Note: Students who wish to work collaboratively on a project should submit a single proposal (letter, budget, SASE, work sample) with appropriate supporting materials for each student.

Deadline

Submit application during the month of February. Entries will not be accepted if postmarked after March 1, 2010. Applicants must be registered undergraduate students at Duke University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
