An Exhibition from the Center for Documentary Studies and Student Action with Farmworkers
The Center for Documentary Studies’ (CDS) Summer Migrant Project led to the formal founding of Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) in 1992, establishing a new model for blending advocacy with documentary expression.
The words in SAF’s name outline a compelling equation: students using action to better the lives of farmworkers. This formula, rooted in documentary experience and expression, challenges students to sensitively discover ways to reveal the stories of farmworker lives. The tools of documentary work—recording interviews, taking photographs, writing reflectively, among other approaches—are all available to SAF interns and students in CDS courses, who often combine mediums to portray the people they meet and the stories they hear as fully as possible.
As border crossings, undocumented immigration, and related labor issues continue to define debate in the national political arena, the perspectives of those who have uprooted their lives and risked their livelihoods to come to the United States are seldom heard. Through the collaborative project Nuestras Historias, Nuestros Sueños/Our Stories, Our Dreams, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and Student Action with Farmworkers collected stories about the experiences of Latino immigrants, illuminating their reasons for coming to this country and the obstacles they face once they arrive. In particular, the project focuses on farmworker families in the Carolinas and their dreams for the future; on their traditions, their educational aspirations, and their challenges as they try to pursue higher education.
The project—which began in 2006 and involved undergraduate students at CDS, SAF interns from across the country, faculty members, seasoned documentarians, and young people from farmworker families—created this traveling exhibition, a publication, and a multimedia Web site. In photographs and audio recordings, the exhibit uses the documentary arts to amplify the voices of Latino migrant youth and their families so that their stories can be heard.
Additional support for the publication and the traveling exhibition was provided by the Adelante Education Coalition, the Fulfilling the Dream Fund, the GlaxoSmithKline Endowment Fund of the Triangle Community Foundation, the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, the North Carolina Humanities Council, Duke University's Trinity College and the Powell Family Endowment Fund, and the Provost's Common Fund at Duke University.

Una exposición itinerante del Centro para Estudios Documentales (CDS) y Estudiantes en Acción con Campesinos (SAF)
El proyecto de verano con trabajadores migrantes del Centro para Estudios Documentales (CDS) precedió a la fundación de Estudiantes en Acción con Campesinos (SAF) en 1992, y se convirtió en un nuevo modelo para combinar la defensa a favor de un grupo y el trabajo documental.
Las palabras que constituyen el nombre de SAF representan un esquema cautivador: estudiantes usando la acción para mejorar las vidas de los campesinos. Esta formula, arraigada en la expresión y experiencia documental, representa un reto para los estudiantes para que descubran maneras de contar las historias de las vidas de los trabajadores con sensibilidad. Las herramientas para el trabajo documental—grabar entrevistas, tomar fotografías, escribir con reflexión, entre otros métodos—están a la disposición de los estudiantes de SAF y de alumnos de cursos del CDS, quienes por lo general combinan varios medios para representar a las personas que conocen y las historias que escuchan lo mejor posible.

El proyecto Nuestras Historias, Nuestros Sueños/Our Stories, Our Dreams es un esfuerzo conjunto del Centro para Estudios Documentales en Duke University y la organización Estudiantes en Acción con Campesinos. La colección de historias sobre las experiencias de inmigrantes latinos presenta las razones por las cuales vinieron a este país y los obstáculos que enfrentan cuando llegan a los Estados Unidos. En particular, el proyecto se enfoca en familias de trabajadores agrícolas en Carolina del Norte y del Sur y sus esperanzas para el futuro; sus tradiciones, sus aspiraciones educativas y las barreras que enfrentan al tratar de continuar sus estudios e ir a la universidad.
El proyecto comenzó en el año 2006, y contó con la participaron de estudiantes de licenciatura, estudiantes de prácticas de SAF de diferentes partes del país, profesores, documentalistas veteranos e hijos de trabajadores agrícolas para crear una exposición itinerante, un libro y este sitio en Internet multimedia.
