Vietnam: Book of Changes

Vietnam: A Book of Changes features selected work from photographer Mitch Epstein's six visits to Vietnam between 1992 and 1995. These photographs, which often take the form of still lives, offer the viewer a haunting and stark perspective on a country whose true essence eludes the West. The evocative pictures are not about the American experience of war in Vietnam, nor is it the pastoral idyll other photographers have portrayed. These photographs are a fascinating document of a country stepping out of the ether of isolation and into the market economy. This exhibition was organized by Wooster Gardens Gallery in New York City. A book, Vietnam: A Book of Changes (DoubleTake/W. W. Norton, 1997), also accompanies the exhibition.
