Two collections of photographs presenting Helen Levitt's year-long chronicle of Mexico City and Gertrude Blom's forty-year document of her life with nine Maya groups are brought together in the Juanita Kreps Gallery of the Center for Documentary Studies. The show opens Friday, February 27, 1998.
The works by Helen Levitt and Gertrude Blom are extraordinary for their documentary angle: Levitt's journey into Mexico City was one of the first attempts of any photographer to avoid the more commercial and tourtists' sections of the metropolis; Blom's photographs were not photographs to her - they captured her friends' faces and held memories of specific events and times.
