ELEVENTH ANNUAL DOCUMENTARY HAPPENING
Wednesday, January 31, to Sunday, February 4, 2007
Presented by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University
with support from the Program
in Film/Video/Digital at Duke University
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS HAS BEEN
EXTENDED TO JANUARY 16, 2007
We are seeking documentary….
FILM! VIDEO! AUDIO! PHOTO! and MULTIMEDIA!
The Happening is a community festival; documentary artists come
together to share and discuss their work, to learn, and to be inspired.
We encourage first-time projects; we welcome class projects. In
the longtime spirit of the Happening, we define the term “documentary”
quite broadly! In addition to work suggested by the term’s
traditional connotations, we encourage the submission of any piece
the least bit autobiographical in nature or even pieces that simply
employ narrative devices reminiscent of documentary techniques.
If you are concerned that your project might not fit the guidelines,
please don’t hesitate to contact us.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS HAS BEEN
EXTENDED TO JANUARY 16, 2007
Submission Fee
This year, the Happening registration fee is $50 (this includes
all evening events and two days of workshops, screenings, and gatherings—most
with food!). Anyone who submits work to the Happening receives $10
off the registration fee AND is guaranteed a 20-minute slot with
one of our ace media gurus.
Please send a check for $40 made out to the Center for Documentary
Studies with your submission. Please write Happening Submission
on the check’s memo line.
Project Length
The Happening is a short-documentary festival. We accept projects
ranging from 30 seconds to 15 minutes.
Works in Progress
We welcome work-in-progress submissions of up to 15 minutes. Please
submit no more than 15 minutes of work; we will not select the 15
minutes for you.
Documentary Artist Participation
The Happening exists to bring documentary artists together; selected
artists present their work and receive feedback from an audience
of peers and dedicated enthusiasts. Although we reserve the right
to occasionally show a piece of work without the creator(s) present,
we will give preference to projects by those who plan to attend
the festival. Remember—your submission fee covers your registration!
Review of Work
Work will be chosen by guest documentary artists. Public showings
of submissions will include discussions among audience members and
guest curators.
