Awards for Remembering
Jim Crow
Carey McWilliams Prize, given each year
by Multicultural Review for an outstanding
scholarly or literary publication on an aspect of cultural diversity in
the United States
Lillian Smith Book Award, given each
year to honor writers who, through their writing, carry on Lillian Smith's
legacy of illuminating the conditions of racial and social inequity in
the South and proposing a vision of justice and human understanding. Lillian
Smith, internationally acclaimed author of the controversial novel Strange
Fruit (1944), was the most liberal and outspoken of white mid-twentieth
century Southern writers on issues of social and racial justice. The Smith
awards have been presented each year since 1968, making them the oldest
regional book award in the South.
