Further
Readings (pdf document)
This bibliography appears at the end of Remembering
Jim Crow: African Americans Tell About Life in the Segregated South
(2001), the first book to result from the Behind the Veil Project. The
bibliography consists of scholarly books and articles written about various
aspects of African American life during segregation and is organized to
correspond with the chapter headings in Remembering
Jim Crow.
BTV Articles
and Books Database (pdf document)
The Behind the Veil Project office at the Center for Documentary Studies
maintains a large collection of articles and books on African American
life during segregation. The collection currently includes over 800 articles
and books. While physical access to the collection is restricted to BTV
staff, the database that catalogues the works is provided here for researchers.
The database is particularly useful for individuals looking for scholarly
articles published during the first half of the twentieth century, as
BTV staff members have made a special effort to find works that may not
appear in other electronic databases or in more recently published bibliographies.
Works are listed alphabetically by author and include title information
and the publication date (when available) as well. Some entries may lack
full publication information, but these details, as well as newer citations,
will be added periodically.
American Communities Course
In the fall of 1997, the Center for Documentary Studies sponsored an undergraduate
seminar entitled American Communities: An
Oral History Approach. Taught by Paul Ortiz, the graduate research
coordinator for the Behind the Veil Project, the seminar provided a unique
opportunity for undergraduate students to interview older African Americans
in Durham, North Carolina, about their experiences during segregation.
The interview tapes that resulted from the course are deposited in the
John Hope Franklin Collection of African and African American Documentation
at the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke
University, as are transcripts excerpts from each interview. The American
Communities Web page contains biographical sketches of eight interviewees
as well as audio excerpts from the interviews.
