Announcing
Call for Submissions in National Photography Competition
25 UNDER 25: NEW AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHERS
DURHAM, NC—In October 2005, the Center for Documentary Studies
(CDS) at Duke University announced an open call for submissions
in the third 25 UNDER 25 competition. Every five years, CDS publishes
a collection of work showcasing the talent of twenty-five of America’s
most promising photographers, twenty-five years old and younger.
The second book in the series, 25
Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers, was selected
a Best Book of 2003 by Photo District
News.
This new volume of 25 UNDER 25 will feature photographs that explore
the theme “transitions": what it means to be in-between,
in flux, at odds, in a new state of being—personally, locally,
nationally, or internationally. The photographers, who must have
been born on or after April 28, 1980, will be selected in a widely
publicized, nationwide competition run by CDS.
These books show us a new generation’s fascination with the
camera, and what seems an almost intuitive understanding of images
and the power of visual storytelling. Whether self-taught or college-educated,
these talented artists explore the medium in sophisticated and engaging
ways—and their approaches to the art include photojournalism,
highly personal essays, art constructions, candid snapshots, portraits,
still lifes, and photos with a message. 25 UNDER 25 is a window
on the dreams and anxieties of these innovative young photographers
at the start of their careers.
As Lauren Greenfield wrote in her preface to the most recent volume,
“Susan Sontag said that ‘to photograph is to confer
importance.’ The work of these photographers demonstrates
not only the importance of what they are shooting, but of themselves,
their ideas, their struggles, their lives. Their pictures prompt
us to see what would otherwise not be noticed.”
Photographers from the two previous collections who have established
strong careers in photography and gone on to publish their images
in magazines, or in book form, as well as show their work in solo
and group exhibits, include: Alex Ambrose, Tracey Chiang, Reuben
Cox, Ken Fandell, Wyatt Gallery, Eric Gottesman, Greg Halpern, Colby
Katz, Misty Keasler, Kate Lacey, Carrie Levy, Thom Lussier, Malerie
Marder, Brian McKee, Laurel Nakadate, Brad Richman, Andrew Rogers,
Alex Tehrani, Hank Thomas, Carla Williams, and Jessica Wynne
The deadline for the 25 UNDER 25 competition
is April 28, 2006. The selection process will take place
during 2006; the book will be published in 2008.
